Iloilo River Esplanade: Stretch of Peace and Tranquility

This afternoon was my first day out on the streets alone after a long time. I decided to try to gain a better understanding on how to embrace the gentle curves of Iloilo River Esplanade. Well, I just brought my camera and my almost battery-emptied phone. The afternoon was quite warm. Philippine roads are crowded of motorized vehicles, and Iloilo, the City of Love, is not an exception. However, the beauty of Iloilo River Esplanade will take you to a better place. The riverside lateral park extends up to 1.2 kilometer and is a stretch of tranquility in the busy city. Now, it is a popular site for both locals and tourists, and is termed as Iloilo River Esplanade: Stretch of Peace and Tranquility.

What a beautiful sight!

As soon as I started entering the Esplanade, the serenity of the place crept in after a short while. I told myself “Just keep walking”, and I was in awe.

THE ORIGINAL PLAN

Long before, what is now the Esplanade never meant to be that way. Supposedly, the stretch was an access road to ease the heavy traffic along the General Luna Street. Aside from that, it should help alleviate the flooding in the said area.
But, it never turned out to be that way. When local officials noticed that many were using the stretch to walk, jog, and bike, they thought of reconsidering the decision. The Ilonggos fell in love with the street. “We don’t want cars. We want to walk here instead.

This part of the city has more open spaces for people. So, if you are up for a walk with your family and friends, this place is great for you. The river esplanade gives you breathing space. It also encourages those who want to be active. You can walk, jog and cycle in the area. What I also love about this place is it is surprisingly clean despite the number of joggers and bikers. NO LITTER. NO GRAFFITI. I also saw lovers sitting side by side on benches, friends chit-chatting and taking photos, athletes training and parents enjoying time with their kids. I also saw some kids dressed up in prince and princess costumes for a photoshoot!

It is amazing to know that the once polluted river has turned into a beautiful place creating a green space for the people (both locals and tourist) to enjoy.

Iloilo River Esplanade is a proof that even a place that was once on the brink of death, with cooperation, collab, love and support from the people, could be revived and restored to its natural beauty. Not only that, the beauty is even more magnified.
